Swastika Hair Accessory

Russian Hair-accessory 1830–80, Medium-silk-metal
This is from the collection of Natalia de Shabelsky (1841-1905), a Russian noblewoman compelled to preserve what she perceived as the vanishing folk art traditions of her native country.Braid ornaments were a common part of the maiden's festival costume in Russia. The swastika is an ancient symbol of good luck in Russian culture. The combination of this with the flanking birds creates appropriate symbolism for a wedding.
